The length of grass affects how the ball is contacted and how the ball rolls. A solid golf shot starts with clean clubface-to-ball contact. The longer the grass that you are hitting out of, the more likely you are to get grass in between club and the ball at the point of contact. The three lengths of grass are and their effects on playing are listed below:

- the putting green: the shortest grass; allows the ball to roll the smoothest and allows the cleanest connect between the club and the ball
- the fairway: the second shortest grass; usually more difficult for the ball to roll through than the green. Slight interference between the club and ball (less interference the more the club is hitting the ball on a descending blow).
- the rough: the longest grass on the golf course (outside of hazards); can be different lengths (primary, secondary cuts as you get further from the fairway). Highest level of interference between the club and the ball. The lies vary the greatest because the ball could be sitting up (off the ground) or the ball could be sitting down (on the ground with surrounding rough). It takes the most sound analysis to pick the right shot in the rough.
