When Golf was invented 500 years ago, how did they keep the greens and fairways mowed?

Flocks and flocks of sheep. There were no fairways. Whatever the meadows presented, that was the course which was played. If the sheep created bunkers to ward off the winds those were the traps. Never knew how they created the cup since there were no coffee cans.

They did the same thing Wilma and Fred did to cut their grass.
They tied a handle to a really fast grass eating (grazing) animal and walked it to wherever short grass was needed.
