What is the difference between golf grips and "putter" grips?

What is the difference between golf grips? I bought 7 avs lime green ping grips for my irons. They say they are for putters but can they be used for irons? Please respond. Thanks.

By USGA rule, only putter grips can have a flat surface, used for alignment. The grips on all other clubs must be round and have no alignment aid. Putter grips may also be contoured, like a pistol grip.
