Hot? Fred Couples. Not? Phil Mickelson.

Hot

1. The Clambake. Perfect weather, a smashing new golf course, Sunday dramatics at Pebble, a compelling winner … it’s hard to imagine there will be a better non-major all year.

2. Match Play Wednesday. It’s one of my favorite days of the year, a sunrise-to-sunset day that is the ultimate physical and mental test. And that’s just for the viewers at home!

3. Freddy. It had been seven years since his last victory. And it’s 17 years since he was last a dominant player. It will be fun to see how deep he can take this. (But beware of TA3 …)

4. David Duval. He’s an enigma rolled in a mystery in wraparound sunglasses. If he can come back from the abyss to win again, it will be one of golf’s most amazing reinventions.

5. The LPGA. Another tournament is about to go on the schedule — in Malaysia! — and with the PGA Tour off to such a sluggish start this is a great chance for the women to steal some of the spotlight, beginning with this week’s season-opener in Thailand. Here’s the best part: with the new Golf Channel deal kicking in, we’ll actually get to see what happens over there.

Not

1. Paul Goydos. It’s mortifying to make a 9 on your local muni in front of a couple of buddies. To do so on national TV and give away a tournament in the process? Even the exceedingly glib Goydos seemed at a loss for words.

2. Phil Mickelson. Will someone please tell Lefty the 2010 season has begun?

3. Rory’s back. Maybe this is just a little tweak that will soon be forgotten. But back woes are the game’s biggest red flag, especially for a young, supple prodigy like McIlroy. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.

4. Pebble’s 14th green. One guy makes a 9, he’s a chop. Three guys do it and something’s not right. There’s nowhere to miss on this tiny target, but thankfully the USGA’s Mike Davis is already coming up with some tweaks to avoid an Open folly.

5. Idiotic Tiger rumors. Yeah, sure, we really believed he was going to come back for the Match Play Championship. Which is sponsored by the company that unceremoniously dumped him as a spokesman. And this is a guy who still holds grudges dating to his teens. We used to say stuff like this was too stupid to print. This rumor was too stupid for the Internet.

Improve Your Golf Score: 5 Tips

A new golf season is just starting. Here are a few tips to improve your golf score and your enjoyment of playing.

Set goals for the new season. Take a few minutes a decide how much you would like to improve your golf score. Be realistic if you’ve never broken 100 it probably will be too much of a stretch to become a scratch golfer in just one season. You could however set a goal of consistently playing in the low 90′s. Practice really does make perfect. If you can’t get out to the course to play an entire round, at least go to the driving range a couple of times a week.

Make sure your golf equipment is ready. Inventory your equipment and make any repairs or additions that are necessary. You may have forgotten that unfortunate incident last September when you heaved your 5-iron into the lake after a nasty shank. Sometimes we forget how long we have been using the same clubs. The grips might be worn or the grooves damaged. Check out the latest advancements in club technologies. If your clubs are marked “cleek” or “mashie niblick” you might consider an upgrade to the 21st century, or at least take your clubs to Antiques Roadshow for a quick appraisal. You might get a pleasant surprise.

A change in attitude. Golfers often talk themselves into playing badly, right from the first drive of the new year. If all you can think about is how you always slice the ball on a particular hole, then that’s exactly what you’ll do. Forget about all the bad golf you played last year. Start fresh, with a clean mental slate. Golf pros train themselves to visualize the perfect outcome for each shot. We can all do that, on a modest basis. For most of us, thinking we’ll shoot 65 at Pebble Beach isn’t visualization, it’s hallucination.

Be realistic in what you can expect from yourself. Recognize that your short game is a challenge for you and then practice to change it.

A change in golf buddies. Consider expanding your sphere of friends this year. If you belong to a club, invite one of the members you’ve never played with before to join your foursome. Meeting new friends on the course can make the conversation during the round more stimulating, and may even have benefits down the line in the form of new business contacts. Another benefit is that new golf buddies won’t expect you to make the same old mistakes you always make.

A change in golf venues. Most of us aren’t aware of all the great courses within easy driving distance of our homes. We tend to play the same familiar layouts all the time. Do an online search for courses in your region that offer discount greens fees. You’ll save money and also be able to enjoy a fresh challenge and new scenery.

A fresh outlook, revamped clubs, new golfing buddies, and challenges new courses can make this the most enjoyable and best golf season you’ve ever had.

golf putters- my boyfriend said he needs a new golf putter. I know nothing about them. Help?!?

What are good brands….and what are the price ranges typically? I know nothing about golf what-so-ever. I just know that I want to get him a decent putter by a decent brand. Any suggestions or ideas would be wonderful and appreciated. thanks

Not only do you need to consider brand and price, you need to know if he prefers a blade or a mallet putter. Also what length of putter does he prefer? I suggest you take him shopping and let him try different ones or get him a gift card.

I just ordered a new putter from www.thegolfwarehouse.com and got it for half the price Golfsmith has it.

Should I put Dr Scholls in my golf shoes?

I am trying to extend the life of my Footjoys. I am thinking of putting some Dr Scholls gel insoles in my golf shoe.
Is this a good Idea?
Do I put thr Dr Scholl over the old insole, or remove the old insole and place the new gel in its place?

I dont want to buy new golf shoes this year, I want to get another year walking out of this pair!

I really don’t think putting gel insoles will help preserve your shoes. Might make you feet feel better though.

You should take the old insole out IF your shoe feels too tight with both in. If there is an arch support on the gel one, you may over stress your feet by elevating the arch too much.

Are You Ready For A New Golf Caddy (long enough joke for 18 holes)?

Sam approached the clerk behind the counter in the pro shop and said, "I would like 18 holes of golf and a caddie."

The clerk behind the counter says, "The 18 holes of golf is no problem, but all of the caddies are out on the course. What I will do for you is this. We just got 8 brand new robot golf caddies. If you’re willing to take one with you out on the course and if you will come back and tell me how well it works, your round of golf is on me today."

Sam anxiously accepted the man’s offer.

He approached the first tee, looked at the fairway and said to himself, "I think my driver will do the job."

The robot caddie turned to the man and said, "No sir. Use your #3 wood. A driver is far too much club for this hole."

Hesitantly, Sam pulled out his #3 wood, made good contact with the ball, and the ball landed about 10 feet to the right front of the hole on the green. Delighted, turned to the robot and thanked him for his assistance.

As Sam pulled out his putter, he said, "I think this green is gonna break left to right."

The robot then again spoke up and said, "No sir. I do believe this green will break right to left."

Thinking about the last time the robot corrected his prediction, he decided again to listen to the machine. He made his putt and birdied the hole thanks to the robot and his advice.

His luck didn’t end there, his entire game was the best game he ever played, thanks to the assistance of the new robot golf caddie.

Upon returning to the clubhouse, the clerk behind the counter asked, "How was your game?"

Sam excitedly stated, "It was, by far, the BEST game I ever played. Thank you very much for letting me take one of your robots. See you next week."

A week passed, and excited, Sam returned to the pro shop.

Upon entering the pro shop he turned to the man behind the counter and said, "I would like 18 holes of golf and one of those robot golf caddies, please."

The gentleman from behind the counter turned to Sam and said, "Well, the 18 holes is no problem. However, we had to get rid of the robots. We had too many complaints."

Confused, Sam cried, "COMPLAINTS? Who in the hell could’ve complained about those robots? They were incredible!"

The clerk sighed and said, "Well, it wasn’t their performance. It was that they were shiny silver metal, and the glare from the machine was blinding to other golfers on the fairway."

Sam said, "So then why didn’t you just paint them black?"

The clerk nodded sadly and replied, "We did. And then four of ‘em didn’t show up for work, two filed for welfare, and the other two robbed the pro shop."

LMAO. hahahahahaha… ohhh you’re in trouble, you’re a wanted guy with them blacks. LOL, still stalking you, LOL..

Looking to get boyfriend new golf putter for birthday. What would you suggest? Ping Craz E is popular right n?

Do I get a size based on his height or what criteria?

I agree with the last two guys. There’s no way you can buy a putter knowing which one he’ll like.

I would buy him a golf lesson package instead. There’s nothing like getting better at golf.
