Gear Notes: Michael Sim’s Titleist Hybrid, TaylorMade’s New Drivers, Ping’s Irons and Callaway’s New Tour i(z) Ball

Michel-Sim-Torrey-Pines-Titleist_600 Titleist

Michael Sim (right), who in 2009 won the Nationwide Tour money title and Player of the Year award, as well as a battlefield promotion to the PGA Tour, spent some time at the Acushnet Test Facility before the start of last week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

According to Titleist’s Blog, Sim felt that the distance gap between his AP2 9-iron and his pitching wedge was too large, so he sought the help of some Titleist fitters. By switching from a 47° Vokey Design Spin Milled C-C to a club with 48°, the gap shrank from 18 yards to 12 yards.

Sim also told fitters that while his 695CB 2-iron worked well on the sandy, dry courses in his homeland of Australia, PGA Tour courses demanded shots that fly higher and stop quickly. After trying various hybrids, he put a prototype 503i with a Project X 6.5 shaft into his bag and took out the 2-iron.

Sim also asked Titleist reps to look at his putting stroke using the company’s high speed cameras at the Scotty Cameron putting studio. “It wasn’t as good as what it was last year when I went in there,” he told Titleist. “But we managed to correct that in probably 20 minutes.”

Sim finished tied for second at Torrey Pines. Here is a complete list of his clubs:
DRIVER: Titleist 905R (8.5°) with a Mitsubishi Diamana White 83 shaft

FAIRWAY WOOD: Titleist 909F2 (13.5°) with a Mitsubishi Diamana Blue 93 shaft

HYBRID: Titleist 503i with True Temper Project X shafts

IRONS: Titleist AP2 (3-9) with True Temper Project X shafts

WEDGES: Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled C-C (48°, 54°, 60°) with True Temper Project X shafts

PUTTER: Scotty Cameron for Titleist Newport Squareback
BALL: Titleist Pro V1x

TaylorMade

You’ve had a chance to read all about TaylorMade’s newest drivers, the R9 SuperTri and the Burner SuperFast. Last week at Torrey Pines, PGA Tour pros had their first chance to hit the clubs on the range. The video below, provided by TaylorMade, shows some of their reactions:

Ping
There has been a lot of talk about Ping Eye2 wedges recently, especially after John Daly and Phil Mickelson used the venerable clubs in PGA Tour events. The grooves on the Eye2 wedges would be non-conforming with the USGA’s new rules, except they were grandfathered to be legal in perpetuity thanks to a lawsuit Ping won 20 years ago. However, Ping cannot make more Eye2 irons and wedges with the old grooves, but on eBay the clubs are selling like hotcakes.

KJ Choi Ping Irons What was interesting to see at the Farmers Insurance Open was that there were 24 sets of Ping irons in play. Twelve sets were used by Ping staff players, and 12 were used by players NOT on Ping’s staff, including K.J. Choi (right) who used a set of the company’s new G15 irons. Choi, who is no longer a Nike staff player, also played with a TaylorMade r7 Limited driver.

Callaway
According to the company, Spain’s Alvaro Quiros switched to Callaway’s new Tour i(z) ball at last week’s European Tour event in Qatar, where he finished second behind Robert Karrlson. Callaway officials pointed out that the switch may have helped the longest hitter in Europe get a touch longer off the tee. Quiros averaged  317 yards per drive at this year’s Qatar Masters; at the same event last season, he averaged 314 yards on his way to victory.

Basic Chip Shot Golf Tips

It’s a short low running approach golf shot with overspin or bite used in approaching the green. Other terms used for chipping are:
Chip In – When your ball rolls into the cup after chipping, you hole out with a chip shot.
Chip-and-run – A chip shot intended to run the ball after landing.
Chili-dip – A mishit chip shot, the clubhead hitting the ground well before it hits the ball.

If you wonder: when chipping? The answer is: in every situation within a few yards of the green.

Chip Shot Golf Sequence

Basic Chip Shot Golf Tips

This step by step chip shot checklist will help to drill and improve your chip shot techniques.

1. Take a 6-, 7-, 8- or 9-iron or pitching wedge.

2. Use your normal grip for this chip shot.

3. Address the ball with a narrow stance. The ball placed more towards back foot.

4. Open your feet and shoulders a little bit, not too wide.

5. Lean your body a bit to the left of the pin.

6. Keep your shoulders and your wrists firm, like you should hit with a putter.

7. Hands ahead of the ball, inside your left thigh. Your left hand has to block the vision of your left knee. Right hand for lefthanded golfers.

8. Lean your weight to your front foot.

9. Aim the face of your lady golf club towards the target.

10. Make a slow tempo swing with your arms and shoulders. Like you want to put. Your arms and shoulders move like a pendulum clock.

11. Touch the ground – before you chip the ball. Crisps the grass. Accelerate through the ball and hit it off the toe of the club. Keep your hand ahead of the ball at impact.

12. The follow through of a chip shot should have the same length as your back swing, as mentioned before, like a pendulum clock. A short back swing causes short distance chipping, a long one a longer traject.

13. The golf club lifts the ball up in the air. Practice a lot, and you can make a perfect chip shot on the fairway within a reasonable distance to the pin.

14. And: Don’t look up to early! I think that’s my most important tip for chip shot golf.

What specific golf clubs does a beginner need to play?I know you need a driver and a putter but what else?

I just ordered a driver on line and that is all I own. I’m going to practice driving at a virtual golf place until it gets warmer outside. I am an absolute beginner. What would be the minimum clubs I would need to actually play a round? I am an older (54) female so think the hybrids would be good for me. I am not actually looking for brand recommendations here, but club types. That said, the Callaway GES system sounds good to me because it apparently only has seven clubs which sounds about right to me but I am having trouble finding it. Does anyone know how I could replicate that buying individual clubs? I don’t really want a full set, at least not yet. And carrying 14 clubs around, many of which I probably wouldn’t use at least not soon, sounds like a waste of energy. So what is the minimum and what are they? Please be specific because a lot of what I have read is pretty confusing. So many choices! Thanks.

I am 58 yr old golfer – been playing for 18 months. I use Driver, 3 wood, 4 iron 6 iron 9 iron pitching wedge sand wedge and putter. My irons are all hybrid, and all my clubs are ladies grade with graphite shafts. Very easy to use. Good luck, you are starting a brand new life. I wish I had started years ago.

golf advice and tips for first timers ??

Me and my friend are juniors in high school and we are going to try out for the golf team. The downside of it is we are the first girls to ever join or even tryout for the golf team. We have never played a full game of golf either. This week was vacation and we have putted and swung a lot. I hope we are ready. The only thing we really need to do know is play a 9 – hole game, we have played on the wii though. Does anybody have any golf advice, tips, or even words of wisdom which we can think about for when we tryout??

This is what I have learned after 12 years of golf.

1. line up the ball with your front heel for driver, gradually move ball back towards to the center of your stance for each club until the pitching wedge, which is directly in the center.

2. Bend knees slightly.

3. Keep good posture in your back (like how you are supposed to sit in a chair), dont "hunch" over the ball.

4. take a smooth, slow backswing while keeping your arms extended and focus on making a full shoulder turn (your back should almost be faceing the target at the top of the swing). Also, try not to let your hips rotate back at all until the top half of your backswing, then let them turn about half as far as your shoulders. The torque increases as the hip turn is minimized and the shoulder turn is maximized (the resistance is like stretching a rubber band.)

5. During the backswing, dont allow your hips to shift laterally. Imagine that someone is pushing on your hip and wont let you slide it backwards during the backswing. But still shift your weight to the back foot.

6. Initiate the down swing by pushing the weight off your back foot to your front, twisting your hips and whipping your shoulders thru. All while maintaining the connection of your arms and shoulders (keeping the club infront of your chest and not letting your arms fold across your chest.)

7. let your wrist natural un hinge and release through the ball.

8. golf is a mental game. it is sometimes better to not focus too much on where the shot will go and trying to control it, all you can do is to swing with good form and hope that you hit it good.

help with my golf game

i am an amateur golfer and i have some problems with my game. first off i can drive 250 yds. consistently on the fairway with an occasional 300-325 yd drive. i can putt very well, i have made a few putts over 40-50 ft. and am money from inside 10 ft. the only problem is I CANNOT CHIP FOR SHIT!!! i have tried everything from reading golf tips to watching golf channel all day. every time i go to use my irons or pitching wedge, i either top it, or shoot it sideways. and the only times that i hit it well it is way off target. if anybody has any advice please let me know.

this is something that you need to practice without pressure when you are not in a match (in your backyard is a great place).

make sure to keep your wrists locked (VERY IMPORTANT, don’t try to flick the ball up) people often do this to try to get more feel on their shots, but it makes them very inconsistent.
open your stance and take a short backswing (almost as if you were putting)
