How To Golf with 120 Golf Lessons

The topic for our article today is golf iron shots. You have hit a good drive and now it`s time to hit a quality iron shot. There are many factors that come into play but, for today, we are going to review four (4) tips that will help us to hit quality iron shots and, in turn, lower our golf scores.

These golf iron shot tips will help you to go through the thought process that will produce quality golf shots. You will be amazed how quickly your golf scores will come down. Just using some common sense can dramatically effect how we play and our golf scores, plus, did I mention, your enjoyment of the game!

Four (4) Golf Iron Shot Tips

1. Stay within yourself.

Don`t try to hit your seven (7) iron one hundred and seventy (170) yards when your best seven iron shot only goes one hundred and fifty (150) yards. Hit the iron that will get to the target with a comfortable swing, no overswinging! Also, when you are determining the yardage for your iron shot, be sure to take into account the position of the pin on the green. By this I mean, even though you are standing at the one fifty (150) marker, you might be one hundred and sixty five (165) yards to the pin if the pin is at the back of a large green, or one hundred and thirty five (135) yards if the pin is in the front. You don`t want to back off of your golf swing but you also don`t want to be grunting!

2. Know how far you hit each iron.

I know you have seen this and it really slows down play. What I am talking about is watching someone pacing of their yardage to the pin and you know, full well, that they have no clue how far they hit each iron shot. So, my point is, that we need to spend some time at the driving/practice range, to find out how far we hit each iron shot. Now, we probably are not going to know how far each iron shot goes, to the yard, like the tour pros do but we can find out within a five (5) yard range. There is nothing more frustrating than hitting a good drive and following that up with a well hit iron shot and the golf ball ends up ten yards short or long. If we expect to hit the correct iron shot, we need to know how far we hit each iron.

3. Play the shot that your lie will allow.

We need to survey our lie and determine how the lie is going to effect our iron shot. By this I mean, if we a playing summer rules, no preferred lies, the lie will dictate what kind of shot we have to play. If the lie is less than perfect, we need to adjust where we play the golf ball in our stance. With a poor lie, we need to move the ball back in our stance so that we will be able to make solid contact. You also need to adjust for downhill, uphill and sidehill lies.

In general, we need to adjust our stance to follow the contour of the fairway for uneven lies, keeping in mind that uphill lies will add loft to your iron shots (hit more club) and downhill will take loft off of our iron shots (hit less club).

4. Play the percentages.

Here’s a question. If the best players in the world aim away from some pins then should not we do the same? If the pin is on the side of the green near a bunker, water hazard or out of bounds, it may make sense not to try to hit directly at the pin but hit your iron shot to the safer part of the green. We have to measure, the percentages, our chances of pulling off a shot. The best in the world do it! So, next time you are getting ready to hit your iron shot, stop to think of what is your best percentage play. This alone will shave numerous strokes of your golf score.

Also, remember there is a right and wrong side of the green to miss on. You would prefer to miss the green on the side away from where the pin is placed on the green. This gives you the best chance to get up and down for your par, if you miss the green.

Those are four (4) iron shot tips. There are many more, that we will discuss in future articles. But for now, if you follow these golf tips for your iron shots, you will dramatically increase your pars and decrease those bogeys and dreaded others!

The golf grip plays a key part in golf and is the foundation of which a great golf swing can be built. There’s no question that learning even the basics of the grip will get any player on the right track to straighter more consistent golf shots, and should not be overlooked when it comes to developing your golf swing.

Here are a few golf grip tips that will hopefully get you on the right track to hitting better more consistent golf shots:

1. Grip Pressure

A common mistake most players make when gripping their golf club is holding it to tightly. The correct grip pressure should be tight enough to take the weight of the club through the golf swing but loose enough to allow you to swing through your golf shot in a fairly relaxed way. Holding your golf club to tight will ultimately give you a less relaxed swing causing a loss of distance and accuracy in your golf shot. To put it simply, on a scale of 1 to 10, (1 being a loose golf grip and 10 being a tight golf grip) the correct grip pressure would probably be around a 5 or a 6. A good golf grip will ultimately result in a more relaxed golf swing and increased clubhead speed resulting in more distance and accuracy when hitting your golf shot.

2. Grip Types

In golf there are 3 different types of golf grip.

The Overlapping Grip (The Vardon Grip)

The Interlocking Grip

The Baseball Grip

Usually when deciding what grip type to use for your golf swing, most players would be advised to choose a grip that feels comfortable and right for them. But just incase your having trouble choosing, here are a few key point to consider.The overlapping grip is where the little finger on your right hand sits on top of your forefinger and middle finger on your left hand. This grip is generally used by golfers with larger hands and is probably the most common of the 3 grips because it makes it easier to keep your grip as light as possible when swinging.The interlocking grip is where the little finger on your right hand is interlocked with the forefinger on your left hand. This grip is good because it feels a lot more like the hands are working together as one, and is probably best suited for players who’s hands are slightly smaller.The last grip to consider is the baseball grip. This is where the little finger on the right hand sits next to the forefinger on the left hand. Like the interlocking grip, this grip is better suited for golfer’s with smaller hands and for some golf players tends to be the most comfortable.

3. Gripping the Golf Club

Before going in to details about how to grip the golf club, it is important to remember that the clubhead should be facing the target line of where you want to hit your golf shot. With this task completed, the next step is to let the golf club sit on your left hand making sure the club sits between the palm of your hand and the base of your fingers. This is an essential part of achieving a great golf grip because if the golf club is held mostly in the palm of the hand it can cause a very inconsistent golf swing.With the golf club in place the next thing you need to do is wrap your hand around the club. It is important to remember that you make sure that the clubhead is still facing the target and that the thumb and forefinger form a V shape pointing towards your right shoulder. If your golf grip is correct you should be able to see between 2 to 3 knuckles visible on your left hand.With your left hand in the correct position all you need to do now is bring your right hand in as if you were shaking hands with the club. When doing this try to keep your left thumb covered by the base of you right thumb and remember that the back of your right hand should be square to the target. And also remember to use one of the 3 grip types discussed earlier in this article, whatever feels comfortable for you.

Now that you have the correct golf grip you should be well in you way to hitting longer, straighter more consistent golf shots.

The golf handicap system is implemented at golf courses, for golf tournament play. Trophies and prizes are awarded at the end of golf tournaments, based on golf scores. In order to make the golf game fair play, the handicap system is based on the ten lowest differentials of the last twenty games on an eighteen-hole course in one season. Some golf associations will accept fewer golf games. It can also be used for fair play outside of golf tournaments. The following is a short guide on how the golf handicap system works.

Handicap numbers are recorded for golf players numbered one through thirty-six, the number one being the lowest handicap, and the number thirty-six being the highest handicap. A scratch golfer has no handicap, better known as a scratch player.

Now lets take a look at how these numbers come into affect. If a player’s handicap is ten, and another player’s handicap are twenty. The difference between the two players is ten golf strokes. Therefore, to even up the match, the player with the lower handicap, which this case is the ten-handicap golf player, has to give out ten golf strokes to his opponent on eighteen holes, to make the golf game fair play. How do you identify on which golf holes they are going to be given out?

Typically on most, if not all golf scorecards, you will find numbers 1 through 18 near the bottom of the scorecard beside Men’s HCP and Ladies HCP. The numbers 1 through 18, you will also find out of order. The reason for the disorder of numbers is, the number 1 being the hardest golf hole, and the number 18 being the easiest golf hole. The golf course, or architect of the golf course, determines the order of numbers on any given golf hole, by the yardage and slope rating, and or other difficulty of the golf hole.

Now that we have determined how many golf strokes are to be given out, and where they are to be taken. The higher handicap in this case, which is the twenty handicap golf player, gets ten golf strokes for eighteen holes, on holes numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, and 10. This should make the match a lot closer, if both players are playing within their game. It typically works out to one golf stroke on every other golf hole in this example, depending on how the golf course is laid out. Another example would be a scratch player and a thirty-six-handicap player, the scratch player having to give out two golf strokes on every hole.

Keeping track of your handicap, and using a handicap system, will help make the game fair play in a lot of golf matches, when playing against other opponents.

Check with your local golf pro, or golf association, on an official guide for the golf handicap system, and for maintaining a legitimate handicap. If you belong to a golf course, they should have a system in place to use for tournament play, which is recognized by most golf courses and golf associations.
